January Book Review

Quote about reading | January Book Review | 2017 | Margaret Paige

What could be more true? A lot of bloggers talk about their “quiet time” each morning. For me it’s each night (seriously, my mornings are spent scrambling around getting ready for work, when do I have time for quiet?!). I love to curl up about 9:45 and read for a half hour before falling asleep. I read 3 books for my January Book Review (so low for me), and I’m going to throw in some podcasts I loved because I got a tad too hooked on those and skipped some of the books on my list…

January Book Review:

Talking As Fast As I Can by Lauren Graham

I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fan, but this book let me down. Her title isn’t lying, she’s just babbling. Lauren Graham, I love you girl, but a few chapters of your GG set life wasn’t all I wanted to know 🙁

Rich and Pretty by Rumaan Alam

I read this book as a part of #readingcupcakes with Marci’s blog/Instagram. Ugh, there was nothing rich or pretty about this. The first 50 pages were good and I had faith in the author (being that it is a male writing about two women’s 20+ year friendship…), but it let me down. There wasn’t a climax or a big turning point. I was sadly happy it was over. The plus of this book was that it continuously reminded me of my friendships and I happily made plans with some girls I should have made long ago.

An Island Christmas by Nancy Thayer

Thank you Nancy Thayer for brightening my month! This was an easy read with a true plot. I would recommend Nancy Thayer to anyone looking for something to read on a flight or while catching some sun on a vacation or lazy day.

Currently Reading:

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Would you believe my 11-year old teammate picked this book out? She basically read my mind since it was on my 2017 reading list. You’ll have to wait until the beginning of March to hear if this ends well, though!

So, that’s it for books. Next up, the podcasts I’ve been consistently running to or listening to while driving.

January Podcasts

For my bloggers:

Christy Wright's Business Boutique Podcast | January Book Review

  1. If you haven’t listened before, you have got to get onto Christy Wright’s Business Boutique. She has an awesome one on goal setting and some great business/blogging tips. Her guests rock, too.

2. Amy Porterfield’s Online Business Podcast. She covers content, calendars, promotions, and everything you need to know. This is a great listen while driving as she doesn’t require as many note thought processes as Christy’s does.

For My Catholic (or just religious) Gals:

Father Mike Schmitz Podcast | January Book Review

3. Father Mike Schmitz is a priest at a Minnesota college and he doesn’t know it, but he is like my hero. I used to lay in bed nightly in Chicago and just fall asleep to his homilies, he truly brought me back to Catholicism. They are recorded weekly and I listen to them on the way to work and during a good run. He is incredibly relatable and motivating! I first learned about him at SEEK, a FOCUS Catholic Conference that happens each year for college students. I heard him speak and I was just blown away when I realized a priest actually understood young adult life. Whether you’re struggling with your faith or the most devout Catholic, you should give him a listen.

So, there you have it. 3 books + 3 podcasts! What did you read/listen to for the first month of the year? I’d love your suggestions!

Couldn’t agree more about Rich & Pretty. It’s never good when I feel like I have to force my way through a book and very rare that I don’t finish one, which is what happened for me with this one and why I never reviewed it! Thankfully the last two months books have really had me hooked!
